Food Review : Foods Around Kajang, and UKM Part I

I had wanted to do this for a long time. To compile a list of restaurants and foods around Kajang-Bangi area for the benefits of UKM students and Kajang-Bangi folks. First of all, places you should go

1) Chat Hei (literally translated as 7 Happiness)
CH is one of the places where you can bring anyone important there without feeling embarrassed in Kajang. Say, if you wanted to bring a new date, you won't go too wrong here. This tiny little restaurant is located near the Kajang Pasar, across the river/huge drain that always flood and you can lamost missed it if you don't look well.

see how tiny is the shop?
The food here are accetablely good. The price is on the range of RM 10 - RM 20 so even if you are in a tight budget, you can always get your date to eat here.

my favorite : zha zheong ramen

The picture you see above is a dry ramen called zha zheong ramen. The combination of sauce and ramen is tuned nicely, though i would say the flavoring is a bit over.

chicken chop rice anyone?

Next is the chicken chop rice. As you can see, the chop is very tiny but is good enough for a small appetite person, but not me. The frying is just nice, you won't have burnt or raw meat there, and that itself is an achievement. The dipping sauce is mixed in the right way to complement the light flavor of the fried chop. And for all that, you also get a fried rice wrapped in egg. I almost say omellette but no, it is not. So, now you are full.

2) 21st Century Cafe

This cafe is located at the middle of the hill at Bukit Mewah. The food here are slightly on the high side at RM20 onwards. However, this is compensated with fantastic night view and good food. Certainly a place for lovers.

Amongst the notable menu here is the cheese steamboat. But if you are thinking of a big pot of melted cheese slowly boiling your foods to cook, you are wrong. Apparently, you are to dip your fully cooked and flavored food into a small pot of melted cheese for added flavor. Now that is also good enough right?

cut out from here...
dip inside here

All in all, this is a fantastic place to be in. Well worth the money you pay.

3) Wong's Kitchen Shabu Shabu

Located at Sungai Chua, rumour has it that it had already closed down. Now i am sad because the condition here is great, you can really enjoy your steambot unlike the craze now of streambot buffet where you actually have to eat like you have never eaten before and grab foods like a beggar in a charity free foods drive.

who can say no to this cute pot?

I love it here because the herbal soup base is fantastic. With aircond, you can eat here slowly and tasting your food like you should, not gobling up everything like a hungry beggar.
this was the promotional set for 4 during their one year anni'

The pricing here is based on sets and ala carte. One normal set cost you RM 12.90 ++ while the chicken set that i normally take cost me RM 16.90 ++..
this dessert is surprisingly good!!
Oh, how i miss this place..Auntie Wong, reopen this place please?

4) Noddle Station, Metro Point

Next is this Noddle Station at Metro Point. All types of noddles you normally find around are found here, if you don't mind paying extra, that is. The pricing here is RM 10 onwards.

The plus point in this restaurant is that the mee are in-house and boiled to perfection. You won't get too soft a mee or too raw. And the soup base is just nice and had its own distinction to it.

recommended - but i forgot the name =p think it is some har mee after adding extra wan ton
and this is some clear soup mee, after adding extra mee

can you believe this is green tea?

Another thing that i think is most commendable about this restaurant is, the pictures you see in the menu is the one you will really get when it comes out of the kitchen. How about that for a change?

I think that's all folks for part 1. There will be more to come in the near future.

Food Review : Wan Chai HK Restaurant

Recently i joined a group food blog and below is my first post;

Wan Chai HK Restaurant Part 2

I don't know what gone into your taste buds, Chris but Wan Chai just won't do it.

Chris praise the Pork Chop Hot Stone Rice as ichiban and Hot Plate Fish, Chicken, and Pork Set as good combination. He gave Wan Chai 3/5 stars overall.

To be fucking fair, i have never tasted those two but those that i have tried convinced me not to step in Wan Chai anymore.

First of all, the Cheese Baked Rice.

Fuck, just by putting two slabs of meat on top of a half-cooked rice and baked it with a slice or two of cheese is a cheese baked rice?

Tell you what, first of all, the rice is HALF-COOKED!!!!! Too little water i reckon. If my little sister put too little water to boil some rice that might be acceptable but what the hell, you are opening a fucking restaurant for God sake.

Then the sauce. Too fucking poor? Why, the sauce was not even enough to seep through those half-cooked rice and i ended up eating white, tasteless, HALF-COOKED rice, together with two slabs of meat.

The meat, well, it is ok.

The cheese..Cheese...Too poor to put more fucking cheese? Nevermind, its ok...

Next, fried rice.

I have never seen a fried rice like this.
What are those? Tasteless, stingy with toppings fried rice? Puke. puke, puke!!!!!!!

After the meal, Chloe, Cindy and i have to go eat McD to fill up our stomachs. As you can no doubt see, those are really small servings, not to mention not tasty.

Chris give it a 3/5...

Me? hmm...

-6 out of 5...

Say something nice?

Good job pasting your restaurant name on the wall. Really strong glue..Good buy..

Year Three Law Student CNY Dinner

From 20++ (that is almost all of the Chinese) people down 10 people, this year CNY dinner is a wreck. Wrecked by those who decided eating out together once a year is a bad thing if some people they dislike is also there. And to make thing worse, influence others not to join too.

But then, it's ok, since those who sincerely wanted to join are there to have fun together. But i really wonder what those people who canceled their participation in the last minute are thinking.

Nevermind, so we went to Hoi Tong Steambot in Serdang where we can boil (that is steambot) and stir fry (they called it bbq. Wonder if they never learn English) buffet style.

Some random pics;

Introducing, the organizer, vio vio. Just look at her face.

from right, shea erl, jasmine, yoi ping and amy

amy and yoi ping

wei dhen (i dunno how to spell) sitting beside the most eligible bachelor, Chris. Look at how happy is her.

that is me and xy

and the star of the night, who took all the golden mushroom away, BB.

because of her, we go from this
into this
there are so many mushroom that we cooked them for a long time.

And before it all ends, we have this;

The food is good. Afterall, you cooked yourself =p the soup base is nice, the variety is a lot, things are good, and priced at RM 23.00 per person including tea, this is definately the place to go for group eating.

Neverind if we cannot have all to participate. Nevermind if some never treat the school and course mates as anything. As long as those who do are happily enjoying ourselves, that is all matters right?

Poor Geok who was absent due to dengue. Nevermind, try again next year =p

Food Review : The Ship in Jalan Sultan Ismail

After we went out from Petrosains, our stomachs told us to eat something or they will organize a mass demonstration.

But we are so smart to get out from KLCC at 5.30pm that we are caught in a massive jam.

After a draining and energy sapping drive, we finally reach The Ship. Yes.....our stomachs are saved now.

The Drinks

We ordered a coffee and some concoction which i forgot what it is called. The coffee was just like any coffee you can get from places like this but the other drink was great! But that came witha price tag of RM 8.00

Yup, the right hand side ones cost you Rm8

The Foods

XY ordered a french sounding chicken that is cooked with red wine while i ordered a "normal" sounding chicken called the Black Pepper Chicken. While waiting, we were served bread and butter as appetizer.

This thing cost RM 20.90

This meanwhile, also the same price :p

I always wonder why bread is appetizing. Perhaps i am just not a European.

Anyway, before i managed to savor my bread, the main course came. Needless to say, that was fast and i was hoping that they do not just reheat those foods.

But the foods were good. They are worth every cents you pay for it. The taste was just right with the right portion for each of them.

Then we got another plate of Yong Chow Fried Rice, not because we were still hungry but rather to taste it. I mean, eating Yong Chow Fried Rice in the Ship?

The Yong Chow Fried Rice

I remember when i wrote about Ah Koong Eating House, i mentioned that if you were to provide for a food that can be easily obtained at half the price, make sure you are special. Now, you can get a Yong Chow Fried Rice easily for RM 5 but The Ship charged RM 13.90. So what you get for more than doubling the price?

Plenty. While the taste might be a bit westernized, the quality is there. You get to eat a nice YC Fried Rice. Plus, there are more than half a dozen of large size prowns in there. Imagine how mush the normal Chinese "big wok" gonna charge you for that.

What else, oh yea, you get impeccable service for the price you paid plus the fantastice ambience.

The Dessert

We ordered a banana split to be shared. It consist of three scoop of ice cream together with some fresh fruits and of course, a banana that is split in the middle. It was as good but nothing really special.

Look at that Banana Split!

Impecable Service

The first thing we realised upon stepping our foot into The Ship was that almost all the service staff were foreigners. The only remotely Malaysian looking staff were the captain (i think, or maybe he is the vice captain?) who looked more like a blur Hongkie than a Malaysian Chinese.

However, the service they rendered were fantastic. They were prompt and efficient, though sometime they might not catch you. However, they were well trained and you can be rest assured of their capability. In fact, when we had our YC Fried Rice served, they asked if we were sharing it and gave us two sets of cutlery. The same goes to our Banana Split, they gave us two spoons.

And you won't have to look at their "i-had-a-bad-day" faces as they won't show you any. I just had many fair share of experience even when i am paying them so much for those foods and The Ship is definitely not one of them.

The Ambience

The Ship was designed to be like a restaurant in an old ship. Most of the interior material was made from wood. You get to see some nice painting and some knots that normally a ship would need to tie.

The ambience was great. It is worth the money you spend on the food.

We were Satisfied

Who is not after a hungry stomach is filled with delicious food?

Verdict : Go dine in The Ship!

Food Review : Expensive ABC in USJ 10

After the not so tasty Ah Koong, we launched to usj 10 to cure our craving for some good food. There are too many beautiful restaurants and shops and we ended up shopping in a boutique beside the road and bb and xy managed to get a piece each at a very reasonable price, thanks to Amour (sorry we forgot to snatch some pics of the shop).

Nevertheless, after surveying many restaurant, we finally decided we are not that hungry to splurge on another eating spree (afterall, we just ate, though not really full) and settled down at a delicacies shop called Happy Beans Cafe.

There are a wide range of tao foo fa's and ABC's and xy and i shared a Jumbo Mango Ice while bb got a traditional tao foo fa.

The mango ice was filled with mango, ice and milk and some sweet substances. It is no doubt tasty but it cost RM 9.00 and it is and where near jumbo. Perhaps jumb is only a name not a description

The ambience was fine. There are many funny posters to keep your eyes occupied and it is definitely a place to sit down and have a nice long chat while keeping your stomach filled with sugar.

The service there was decent though you would not find any handsome guy or pretty girl there (at least that day i don't) though not that that is important. As long as the service is good, i don't care how their features were created by God.

All in all, Happy Beans is a nice place though bb almost fell down walking down the stairs outside the shop. We attribute this to bb own carelessness and it had nothing to do with Hapy Beans, except maybe it make her a few grammes heavier. Talking about diet huh?

how to go there?

Overall rating : go grab an ice, forget the price!

Food Review : Disappointing Food

Yesterday xy, bb and me went to eat at usj. after sesat-ing in usj 9, we saw a place called Ah Koong Eating House. And they specialized in fishball.

Now, i would say that when you do something that can be commonly available and wanting to charge more, you must make sure that your food are at least slightly better than the common ones. Sadly, many Chinese Restaurant whom served commonly available foods in an air-conditioned and overcharged way tend to skew towards to level that can be commonly available at almost half the price.

Ah Koong serves mee soup and curry. A bowl of mee soup will set you back RM 5.00 while a curry mee will set you back RM 5.50.

This is what you get for RM 5.00

this cost you RM 5.50

I kid you not but those bowls of mee are small. You can get better in normal places.

We also ordered some yong tau foo. And guess what, they cost you RM 1.20 per piece. Go Ampang and they only cost RM 0.90 per piece.

These are how they come..Look nice though, in a small bowl

By far, this is the best, tasty and fresh

And all that you see (plus another mee soup) cost us more than RM 30, and we only ordered 1 plain water!

As the foods coming, so do some flies. At first there was only one. Then it decided the more the merrier and brought a few more of its friends here. Hmm....

After we ate, we were finding some nice words to say about the restaurant;

xy : The fishballs are fresh.

bb : I can get those anywhere.

fl : We can get air-cond though.

xy : agree, we paid for the air-cond.

bb : ok, so RM 1 for aircond and RM 4 for the mee.

And guess what, by the time around ten pm, our stomachs start to grumble angrily and we ended up eating KFC.

Overall rating : Go eat something else if you are not really into very fresh fishball
